Several years ago a potter friend was doing an outdoor demonstration at a large cultural event. At the time she happened to be throwing a series of small pots off a fairly large hump using a Shimpo wheel when a bystander eventually asked where the clay came from. She was using Plainsman Clay, so quickly said Medicine Hat. No, said the bystander... where is the clay coming from? After a brief discussion my potter friend found out this particular observer thought the clay was inside the wheel body and that my friend must be pulling more clay up and out through the wheelhead each time the clay was coned up for the next small pot.
